He lived during the Heian Era, a time when jujutsu was extremely powerful and many dangerous sorcerers existed. Sukuna’s life was very different from that of a normal sorcerer. He became feared because of his incredible strength and his complete lack of mercy.

Even after his death, his power continued to exist through twenty cursed fingers. Many years later, one of those fingers was eaten by Yuji Itadori. This brought Sukuna back into the modern world and started a chain of events that changed the entire story of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Birth and the Heian Era

Very little is known about Sukuna’s early childhood. The manga does reveal one important detail: Sukuna was originally born as a human during the Heian Era. He was born with a strange and unusual body. According to the story, Sukuna had a twin brother in the womb. Sukuna consumed his twin before birth, and the twin’s soul later became connected to Yuji Itadori’s family line. 

Sukuna grew up in the Heian Era, which is remembered as one of the greatest periods for jujutsu. Powerful sorcerers were everywhere, but Sukuna stood far above most of them. He was not a cursed spirit. He was a human sorcerer who became so powerful that people began to fear him like a monster.

Rise as the Strongest Sorcerer

As Sukuna grew stronger, he became one of the most feared beings of his time. Because they carried Sukuna’s cursed energy, they also attracted dangerous cursed spirits. Some curses even consumed Sukuna’s fingers and became stronger as a result. These creatures were known as Finger Bearers. The twenty fingers became extremely important because collecting them would allow Sukuna to regain more of his original power.

Finger Preservation Across Centuries

For more than a thousand years, Sukuna’s fingers remained in the world. Jujutsu sorcerers tried to keep them sealed and protected because destroying them was almost impossible. The fingers were treated as extremely dangerous cursed objects. Different fingers ended up in different locations. Some were kept by jujutsu organizations, while others were hidden away or discovered by cursed spirits. 

Whenever a finger was found, there was a risk that a powerful curse would appear nearby. This continued until the modern era, when one of Sukuna’s fingers was kept at Sugisawa High School. That single finger would eventually change Yuji Itadori’s life forever.

Yuji Itadori Eats the First Finger

Yuji Itadori first became involved with Sukuna after his friends at school found one of Sukuna’s fingers. The finger attracted cursed spirits, putting Yuji and his friends in danger. To save them, Yuji swallowed the finger. Normally, eating a cursed object like this would be deadly. But Yuji was different. Instead of being completely taken over, he was able to contain Sukuna inside his own body. Sukuna suddenly returned to the world after being trapped for more than a thousand years. 

Yuji could usually control his own body, which frustrated Sukuna. Sukuna wanted complete freedom and looked for every opportunity to take control. This was the beginning of the strange relationship between Yuji and Sukuna. As Yuji continued his journey as a jujutsu sorcerer, he was forced to consume more of Sukuna’s fingers. Each finger brought Sukuna closer to regaining his full strength.

Shibuya Incident

The Shibuya Incident became one of the most important moments in Sukuna’s return. During the chaos in Shibuya, Yuji was forced to consume several of Sukuna’s fingers. This gave Sukuna a large amount of power and allowed him to take control of Yuji’s body. Sukuna then went on a devastating rampage. He fought Jogo, one of the strongest cursed spirits, and showed just how powerful he had become. 

Sukuna eventually defeated Jogo after a fierce battle. He also used Malevolent Shrine, his Domain Expansion, and caused massive destruction across Shibuya. The incident showed everyone just how dangerous Sukuna could be when he was given enough freedom. It also changed Yuji forever. Yuji was forced to face the terrible destruction caused while Sukuna was controlling his body, even though Yuji was not responsible for Sukuna’s actions.

Culling Game

After the Shibuya Incident, the story moved into the Culling Game, a huge battle involving jujutsu sorcerers and cursed techniques. During this period, Sukuna continued watching the people around Yuji. He was especially interested in Megumi Fushiguro. Sukuna had noticed Megumi’s potential much earlier. 

He was interested in Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique, especially because it could summon powerful shikigami. Sukuna slowly began preparing a plan to take advantage of Megumi. His goal was no longer simply to escape from Yuji. He wanted to move into a body that could give him even greater possibilities.

Taking Over Megumi Fushiguro

Sukuna eventually carried out his plan. Using the binding vow he had made with Yuji earlier in the story, Sukuna briefly gained control of Yuji’s body. He then used a finger to transfer himself into Megumi. This was a major turning point. Sukuna had successfully left Yuji and taken control of Megumi’s body. He also gained access to Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique. However, Sukuna still needed to break Megumi’s resistance. 

He used the death of Megumi’s sister, Tsumiki, as part of his plan to crush Megumi’s spirit. After gaining greater control over Megumi, Sukuna became even more dangerous. With Megumi’s body and the Ten Shadows Technique, Sukuna was able to fight at an even higher level.

Final Shinjuku Battle

The final major battle of Jujutsu Kaisen took place in Shinjuku. Sukuna first faced Satoru Gojo, the strongest modern jujutsu sorcerer. Their battle became one of the most important fights in the entire series. Both fighters used their strongest abilities, including Domain Expansions. Sukuna also used Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique and Mahoraga to help overcome Gojo’s Limitless technique. After an extremely difficult battle, Sukuna defeated Gojo. However, Sukuna did not remain at full strength forever. 

After his fight with Gojo, he had to face a large group of powerful sorcerers who worked together to stop him. Sukuna fought many opponents, including Kashimo, Higuruma, Yuta, Maki, Yuji, and others. The battles continued to weaken him, but Sukuna refused to give up. Yuji eventually became one of the most important people in the fight against Sukuna. Instead of simply trying to kill him, Yuji also tried to reach Megumi and free him from Sukuna’s control.

Sukuna’s End in the Manga

Manga Spoiler: This section reveals the ending of Sukuna’s story. Sukuna’s final battle ends with Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, and their allies working together to defeat him. Yuji’s attacks began damaging the connection between Sukuna and Megumi. At the same time, Nobara returned to the fight and used her Resonance technique on Sukuna’s remaining finger. This gave Yuji an important opening.

Yuji continued attacking Sukuna and eventually separated him from Megumi’s body. Megumi was finally able to resist Sukuna and break free. Sukuna was then left without a body to control. Yuji gave him one final chance to change and live differently, but Sukuna refused. His body and soul began to disappear, marking the end of the King of Curses.

However, the final chapter shows that one of Sukuna’s fingers still exists. The finger is no longer dangerous because Sukuna himself has been defeated, and it is kept as a harmless object that can even act as a charm against curses. Sukuna’s final scene also gives an interesting look at his character. 

After death, he meets Mahito and admits that he could have chosen a different way to live. For the first time, Sukuna accepts that his choices were his own. He admits his defeat and walks away with Uraume, suggesting that if he had another chance, he might choose a different path. This brings Sukuna’s long journey to an end from a feared sorcerer of the Heian Era, to the King of Curses, and finally to the villain defeated by the people he once looked down on.

Unlike a normal sword, Sukuna does not need to touch his opponent to use Dismantle. He can send the cutting attack through the air, making it difficult for enemies to see and avoid.

Range: Dismantle can be used from a distance, making it useful for both close-range and long-range attacks. Its exact effective range can change depending on how Sukuna uses the technique.

Domain Clash with Gojo

Sukuna’s battle against Satoru Gojo contains one of the most important Domain Expansion battles in Jujutsu Kaisen. Gojo uses Unlimited Void, while Sukuna uses Malevolent Shrine. At first, the two domains clash directly. Sukuna eventually uses Mahoraga’s adaptation to find a way around Gojo’s Limitless technique, which leads to the development of his World-Cutting Slash. Malevolent Shrine therefore plays a major role in showing why Sukuna is known as the King of Curses. The Twenty Sukuna Fingers Explained

Sukuna’s twenty fingers are some of the most important cursed objects in Jujutsu Kaisen. After Sukuna’s death during the Heian Era, his remaining power was preserved in 20 indestructible fingers. Each finger contains a portion of his cursed energy, and consuming them allows Sukuna to recover more of his original power.

Why Twenty Fingers?

Sukuna’s original body had four arms and four eyes, and his power was divided into twenty fingers after his death. The story treats the twenty fingers as the complete collection of Sukuna’s preserved power. The fingers were turned into Special Grade Cursed Objects, meaning they are extremely dangerous and cannot be easily destroyed. Each finger carries Sukuna’s cursed energy and can attract powerful curses.

The number twenty is also connected to Sukuna’s original body and the way his power was preserved after death. However, the manga does not give a detailed explanation that each finger represents a specific part of his body or a fixed percentage of his strength.

Power Distribution

Each Sukuna finger contains a portion of Sukuna’s cursed energy. When someone consumes a finger, Sukuna’s power inside that finger becomes part of his current incarnation. The fingers are not necessarily equal in practical importance at every point in the story. Sukuna’s overall strength also depends on his body, cursed energy, techniques, and how much of his original power he has recovered.

Yuji was able to consume multiple fingers while keeping Sukuna inside his body. This allowed Sukuna to gradually regain more of his strength without immediately returning to his complete original form.

What Happens When a Finger Is Consumed?

When a person consumes one of Sukuna’s fingers, Sukuna’s presence can manifest inside that person’s body. For an ordinary person, eating a Sukuna finger would be extremely dangerous and could lead to death or possession. Yuji Itadori is different because he can contain Sukuna without immediately losing control of his body.

Each consumed finger gives Sukuna access to more of his lost power. As more fingers are consumed, Sukuna becomes closer to his complete strength. The fingers can also cause dangerous curses to appear because their powerful cursed energy attracts them.

Finger Collection Timeline

Sukuna’s fingers remained scattered throughout Japan for more than a thousand years after his death. Jujutsu sorcerers and other groups kept some of them sealed, while others were lost or discovered by cursed spirits. At the beginning of the series, one of the fingers is kept at Sugisawa High School. Yuji eventually swallows it to save his friends, becoming Sukuna’s vessel.

After that, Yuji is deliberately made to consume additional fingers during the story.
